MANZIL
South African born, Indian and raised by Aotearoa, MANZIL holds many cultures, people and lands with honor. Reflecting on lived experiences, postcolonial theory, and traditional dressing systems, MANZIL approaches contemporary design through embracing the tensions between tradition and modernity. Dedicating herself to exploring the relationships between clothing, culture, and understandings of self shaped by the complexities of diaspora. Working through and learning from the difficult negotiations between home, distance and the parallel evolution of identity and place, her practice seeks to reclaim what diaspora often makes fragile; the ability to wear identity with confidence. MANZIL is drawn to making garments that carry the quiet courage it takes to wear ourselves fully, demonstrating that fashion can be decolonial, regenerative and socially transformative.
